Epidural Steroid Injections – Treating Work Injuries

Epidural steroid injections are a procedure where a steroid is injected into a space between the vertebrae and dural sac.  This is designed to reduce pain in the region and help the patient proceed with healing and physical therapy without pain.   It is designed to reduce swelling in the area, as well.

Are Epidural Steroid Injections Effective?

Usually, the standard course of treatment for a back injury is as follows: rest, ice, modifying activities and physical therapy.  When symptoms persist, an MRI may be recommended.  However, depending on the MRI, your doctor delivers a series of epidural steroid injections.

During an epidural steroid injection, a corticosteroid injection uses a local anesthetic to provide pain relief.   Specifically, it is injected into the space between the disc, spinal cord and spinal nerve (the epidural space.)  Typically, reducing inflammation from a herniated or bulging disc is the major reason for injections.

Epidural Procedure

The procedure uses a mild sedative and outpatient facility under x-ray guidance.  So, you should not drive the rest of the day.  Also, some people experience an increase in pain temporarily.

Some people obtain immediate relief, but others relief requires a series of three injections.  Unfortunately, many people do not respond to injections at all.   However, it is common to try injections prior to exploring more invasive treatments like surgery.
